High Roller Records no longer seems content to re-issue vinyl versions of lost gems from the 80s and is now rolling the dice on some of the modern bands that are revisiting the golden age of Heavy Metal. Germany's Serpent released a four-song demo in 2012 and a live album in 2013, both on cassette, and High Roller has packaged up the original tracks for Possessed by Night, which is the same title as the debut demo.
Raw and unpolished, Serpent take a lot of their cues from the NWOBHM when energy and conviction outweighed talent and skill. Riffs and drums are simple, generally fast and are rely on just a few effects. The vocals aren't great, sort of like a less-talented Paul Di'Anno, and are one of things that hamper Possessed by Night. Combine that with some derivative songwriting and you've got a formula that results in an authentic sounding, but ultimately generic, NWOBHM-inspired record.
There's no reason to think Serpent can't step it up on their next release, and I hope they do, but Possessed by Night doesn't offer anything you haven't heard a thousand times already.
