Killhammer, Mystic Prophecy's eighth studio album, is another slab of Traditional/Power Metal that hits you right in the face with muscular riffs, thick, pounding rhythms and Robert Liapkis' gravelly vocals. While firmly European, I can pick up a lot of US Power Metal this time around. Names like Virgin Steele and Jag Panzer floated in and out of my mind as I listened to Killhammer's crunchy, direct attack. There's also a bit of Black Majesty smoothness over the top of everything. That said, I don't feel the songwriting is nearly as strong as on their last album, Ravenlord. Some of the songs are predicable and even a little cliché. Titles like "To Hell and Back" and "Kill the Beast" just seem too easy and by-the-numbers. Other than that, there's nothing wrong with the album, except maybe the cover of Ozzy Osborne's "Crazy Train," which doesn't do the original justice and is unnecessary. The rest of the songs rock and roll their way out of the speakers and into your ears and while they can get a foot tapping or an air guitar strummed, they leave little lasting impression. That's probably the most damning thing I can say about Killhammer. Mystic Prophecy is a band capable of greatness but while Killhammer is good, it isn't their best work.
