The Storyteller have been also-rans in the Swedish Power Metal scene for the better part of two decades now, producing five albums over their career of often wildly varying quality. Their last one was all the way back in 2005, and that album, Underworld, contained at best a handful of really good songs. This one is more of the same rather generic Power Metal this band has been cranking out since 1995. This time they do seem to be working a slightly crunchier Running Wild sort of sound, with volleying riffage and vocalist LG Persson going for a rougher approach that doesn't really work for him that well. Some songs, like "Strength of Valhalla" benefit from the faster, looser approach, while others not so much. Overall, the album has good energy and keeps the pace up. The playing is tight and none of the songs are terrible, but this is really just one step up from generic. Solid but unremarkable. |
