With a name like Toxxic Toyz you might expect an in-yer-face blast of hairspray-encrusted glam rock from this French horde, but in actuality this is a tidy collection of catchy and progressive Power Metal that flirts with the harder, more classic end of the genre with a striking similarity to Jon Oliva's Pain (even vocalist David McBee has a passing resemblance to the mountain king himself). Fans of Domain, Evidence One, and of course Savatage will enjoy what Mutation, the band's sophomore effort, has to offer, as will those of you who like a good jolt of grit in your Power Metal, as despite the crispy production, there is a real raggedness to this that is a pleasure compared to many of the squeaky-clean contributions we're seeing so much of. Tracks like "Chaos", "Racing The Clock", and "Reasons To Fall" are all top-notch tunes of pounding metal with a happy-go-lucky attitude, very pleasant on the ear, and only just imitative of better bands. Nothing that's going to set the world on fire, but certainly one for the curious Power Metal connoisseur. |
