Debut for this unsigned Florida band, who are sometimes called Evil Amidst, without the "The", but this is how their name appears on the actual album cover, so that’s how I’m using it. Either way it is an annoyingly incomplete sentence. Evil Amidst what? That aside, there is nothing annoying about the band’s music, which is heavy, crushing Death Metal. This is not really inspired by the Florida sound, but owes more to bands like Suffocation and Bolt Thrower. The production is excellent, the riffs are meaty and hooky, and the songwriting has enough variety to avoid the trap of every song sounding the same. The leads are really sharp and melodically sound, which is a nice touch I did not expect. Vocals are undistinguished but satisfactory, and the whole package is just entertaining and visceral. An excellent debut. |
