Coming at us full swing with their first demo, Croatia's Prognan exhibit a natural flair for bashing skulls with their barbaric brand of old school Black Metal, and despite its obviously lackluster quality, Follow The Blind is a good collection of songs that should appeal to anyone with an ear for aural darkness. As you might expect from a band comprised of members of folksters Powerless, there is a bouncy, almost Viking Metal feel to many of the riffs here, most of which plod along at a slow pace. This is no bad thing; Prognan keep their foot off the gas for the majority of this material (though they do unleash the beast on a few occasions), and these slower, more atavistic sections is where the trio excel. Prognan have a good ear for melody, too; a number of these riffs are hard to remove from your brain, much like those from the latest offering from Nordwind. Production-wise, this is small and basic, though it has its breastplate bared, and the only real issue here (because even the vocals are quite good) is the percussion, which for some reason struggles to keep time, like a kid coloring out of the lines. Nevertheless, this three-piece are onto something good, and if you like your Black Metal triumphant but crude, this is certainly worth a listen. |
