Fans of technical Death Metal, rejoice – I guess. ;) It's my first time checking out these guys, and this stuff isn't too bad for the genre, though like many technical bands a lot of the material comes off slightly on the bland side. This is for the most part very fast-paced and not particularly heavy – except for a few passages here and there. The drums are blazingly fast at times and sometimes a bit too much, turning the whole thing into a mess (though I must confess, the "mess" is still somewhat fun.) The guitars are razor-sharp, with a few interesting and catchy riffs and some occasional cool soloing, but there's also a lot of disposable stuff on here. The vocals are an abrasive, throaty growl that's pretty common with modern Death Metal – nothing to say here, the guy delivers the goods. Even though Degenerate has its points of interest, overall I found it a bit too bland to keep me interested, and there isn't anything I'd consider memorable. But fans of modern and/or technical Death Metal may appreciate this more than I did, so check out some samples. |
