It's hard to categorize this band, as the sound is a mix of Heavy, Death, Melodic Death and Doom Metal though overall it has more of a melodeath vibe. This is mostly mid-paced stuff (with its speedy moments) with melodeath-style vocals – not quite Death but close – and very melodic and catchy at times. They have a little groovy thing going here, and even though I'm not a fan of the "groovy approach", this is done a lot better than a lot of bands. Lots of trad-style solos kick in here and there which is pretty cool – some air guitar fun ahead, that's for sure. "Red Sharks" probably takes the cake for catchiest song here, but then again it's a Crimson Glory cover and that pretty much goes with the territory. There's also a cover of Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood" and King Diamond's "Welcome Home", so we've got roughly 15 minutes of covers here. I'll admit that I prefer them over the band's original material presented here. Much better than I expected when I saw the cover art and band name (never judge a book by its cover strikes again!), Heal! may appeal to people who like their "extreme" metal on the mellow, melodic side. |
