Another album from the incestuous Swedish scene, Sanctification is a project by vocalist Magnus Broberg (Dark Funeral, Hypocrisy, Demonoid, etc.) and guitarist Tomas Elofsson (In Battle, Those Who Bring The Torture, etc.). This is an act devoted to blasting, aggressive Swedish Death metal, as you could maybe tell by the fact that it was mixed by the ubiquitous Peter Tagtgren and mastered by the even more ubiquitous Dan Swano. I was expecting this to be an almost generic Swedish product, but this has more energy and fury than I anticipated. The riffs are not really anything to get excited about, but the performances are powerful and the production is huge and heavy, giving this a degree of excitement it might not otherwise have. There are the obvious similarities to Dismember or Bolt Thrower, but this is a lot faster than Swedish DM usually is, and the feral aggression really lifts this above the standard. If you like heavy-as-fuck Death Metal, then you won't regret getting this. It has nothing new or surprising about it, but it has balls. |
