Try as I might, I cannot find much of anything to say about Masterstroke's As Day Grows Darker. It's not that it's a bad album, but it leaves no lasting impression. Power Metal is the genre, however the band have added a heavy dose of down-tuned guitars to their mix (a la Sonata Arctica's Unia). This makes every track sound very similar to these ears. I can honestly say that despite listening to the album several times, I could not remember a single riff or chorus when it was over. As you would expect from a Power Metal band, the songs are expertly played with plenty of driving riffs and just the right amount of keyboards to carry the songs along. As Days Grow Darker sticks to a mid-paced tempo through most of the album. Ultimately, though, the songs are the downfall: they are just not very interesting. Given some better material, these guys could be a force, but As Days Grow Darker doesn't possess said material. |
