This Ending from Sweden offer an interesting sound on their second album. Unfortunately I haven't heard the first one, so I can't say if they have developed. What I have here is relatively decent though. This Ending sound a lot like God Dethroned, mostly due to vocalist Marten Hansen but also the guitar sound. What sets the two bands apart is that This Ending incorporate a good dosage of Industrial influences into their sound at the expense of more limited melodies. A lot of the songs have pretty mechanical sounding stop-and-go up riffs that invoke the Industrial feeling. The sound is definitely not for everyone and will probably scare away most purists. The music is really not bad, but it's missing something to be really good. Most songs are too tame to really punch you in the guts and a few sparse blast sections won't remedy that either. On the other hand there aren't enough melodies, due to the hacked up riffs, for the album to appeal to most fans of the Gothenburg school. Really engaging choruses are nowhere to be found either, although the band tries sometimes, such as on "Deathtrade". This Ending have a unique sound, which is commendable, but they are too stuck in the middle between various camps to appeal to anyone in particular. Few bands made it to the top with a sound of consensus. This Ending will have to decide who to appeal to in the future. Some songs definitely hint at a greater potential, like the more up-beat "Tools of Demise" or "Deathtrade". Crank up the riffs or dish out those melodies, but stop trying to serve everyone. |
