The Void is an Italian Dark/Gothic Metal band and, for a change, this band has a male singer. No semi-operatic/overly clean female melodic vocals here. This singer has a raw style and uses it almost exclusively, save for a few passages where he tones it down a little with a more soothing, melodic style. Musically this is quite decent, mixing dark songs with more upbeat ones, such as "Sad Moon" which has a chorus that really sticks out. The faster songs are the highlight on this, expanding past the Gothic genre into a more traditional and thrashy style - this is where the album gets interesting, with some good guitar work and even the keyboards sound good on this, not getting in the way and just flowing along with the rest. The slower material gets boring quickly, sounding a little bit bland, especially next to the more "rocking" material. I don't know what Gothic purists will make of this, but personally this is more up my alley. Dark/Gothic that rocks, plain and simple. |
