There have been a lot of metal songs about the Battle Of Thermopylae, and in the wake of movies like 300 it was pretty much inevitable that the finest hour of Greek arms would get a whole concept album about it. Sacred Blood is a side project of members of other Greek bands, with Airged L'amh the only one you will have heard of. As I expected, this overdoes the 'epic' a bit, but it does manage to be pretty kickass.
The first few times I spun this, it didn't really grab me, but I kept getting the urge to listen to it again, and we all know what that means. The Battle of Thermopylae is an album packed with heavy, crunching Hellenic True Metal. True, the opening track is a long bit of spoken-word intro with an atrocious accent, and there is a bit more of that scattered here and there. But the rest is all metal. "Land Of The Braves", "Spartan Warlord", "Blades In The Night" and the closing ten-minute epic "Gates Of Fire" — all solid headbanging stuff. There's nothing revolutionary about this at all, but who cares about that shit? All I wanted when I spun this was crunching epic metal-to-the-bone riffs, and that's what I got. The vocals are strong and clear, maybe a bit generic, but solid. The production is sharp and clear, managing to sound pro without being overproduced.
This album took a while to sink in on me, but once it did I have found myself spinning it a lot. This is exactly what I expected it to be when I looked at the cover art: retro, consciously epic, and very cool. Fans of epic metal will not want to miss this.
