Ah, Belphegor. After the tedium of Pestapokalypse I was wondering if this band had shot their wad. But seems there's some ram left in Satan's rod yet, as their seventh album, the wonderfully titled Bondage Goat Zombie, is their best album in years. Belphegor have been in kind of a rut since Lucifer Incestus, with the two subsequent albums being increasingly generic-sounding and dull. But this one gets them back in the groove with fast and furious shredding that actually sounds pissed-off and mean. The songs are hookier and the riffs are once again a kick-ass cascade of blackened Death Metal chaos. Even better, the lyrical focus is back on what Belphegor should be all about: Demons, evil, hatred, and fucking. They even pull off a slower tune here and there, like on the crushing "Sexdictator Lucifer". Unlike the faceless Pestapokalypse, Bondage Goat Zombie is a fast and furious assault of riff-intensive, face-mangling evil. Throw the horns, kids, because Belphegor are back to skull-fuck you. |
