Metsatöll's full length debut is more folk than metal, compared to its successor. Frankly I didn't get as much of a kick listening to this than I did listening to "Terast mis hangund me hinge 10218", which was a hell of a lot of fun. Here the band sounds like it's trying to define itself, so the album is pretty uneven. There are a number of interludes - either chanted or instrumental - and they hurt more than they help, including one where you'd swear the musician screwed up if it wasn't so obvious (theory: It was done on purpose.) With that said, there are several good songs on here, although not nearly as catchy and invigorating as what can be found on "Terast..." There is a lot of folk material that barely registers on the metal scale, but still delivers the goods, traditional instruments and all. The more metallic tracks such as Sðjahunt aren't bad (this one has a little Maiden vibe to it), but a little tame. The vocals are clean and powerful, but not as convincing as on "Terast..." Overall the album isn't bad, but there's too much filler material and the ensemble is too inconsistent to make it enjoyable through and through. They could have cut it short by 15-20 minutes and obtained a better result. I would have been worried if I had not heard the successor to this, but knowing that they greatly improved things with that one, well, all is good. :)
