Saxon is one of those bands that have reached the legendary plateau when it comes to pure metal. This album is a celebration of sorts if you really sit back and think about it. "Killing Ground" is the 20th album for Saxon who released their self-titled debut all the way back in 1979. So you may wonder after all this time does the music seem to be getting stale or is it starting to show it's age? Absolutely and unequivocally not! This band is still kicking out some of the best pure metal on the planet! I won't say that this album is earth shaking or mind numbing but you have to remember something very important when you speak of this band. When you hear the band name you will now exactly what to expect and that is simply some kick-ass metal. This disc has everything that has made Saxon famous in the past. Great songs with excellent guitar work and the ever-present voice of Biff Byford (I swear this guys voice hasn't changed since 1979…:)) Most of the album is mid tempo pure metal in the NWOBHM form and considering they were one of the leaders in this genre it seems really appropriate. Will this album appeal to every metalhead? I kind of doubt that. Will this album appeal to Saxon fans and fans of the pure metal genre? Absofuckinglutely! Does it appeal to me? I have never heard anything from Saxon I didn't like and this new album won't be changing that opinion either. Highly Recommended. |
