Some people may not agree but this is totally kicking my ass. I can't seem to get this CD off my regular playlist. Old Forest is a relatively new Black Metal band hailing from the UK. There's no release year written in the booklet or the CD but it says it was recorded in 1998.
So what does this sound like... Well, what you'd expect from "cult" Black Metal offerings: raw production, raw sound, somewhat low-pitched vocals that are sometimes just whispers. The sound reminds me at times of some songs off Carpathian Forest's Strange Old Brew. Old Forest's playing doesn't really break any new grounds, but I think they did a great job creating a dark atmosphere that perpetuates throughout the whole album, something not many bands have achieved. This makes Into the Old Forest an album that I can listen to many times during the day. Good stuff. There are only 8 tracks listed in the booklet but the CD contains 12, one of them being another version of the very good song "Shadow Whispers".
Now if I could find some more information about the band I'd be a happy camper. In the meantime, if you like Black Metal you should get this. Enough said.
