No, not that Fatal Portrait, this is a Black Metal band from Spain. Spanish Black Metal has not always been that active a genre, so I am glad to see another band from Iberia that is worth hearing. This album says it is a "redux" of the band's debut from 2001 after being broken up for over a decade and just getting back at it a few years ago. Since I never heard the original, I can't tell you how this differs, as the copy says it has not just been re-recorded, but rearranged and reworked entirely. This is definitely in the melodic end of the pool for Black Metal. There are a lot of keys and melodic flourishes, and a definite reaching for an epic, symphonic kind of sound. Some Emperor influence, obviously, but I hear more from bands like Limbonic Art or Ceremonial Castings—fast, aggressive, and layered up with keyboards. If you don't like keys in your Black Metal, you won't like this. If you do, then this is a worthy album to check out. The compositions are not as focused as they could be, and the vocals are mixed too far forward for my ears, but the whole does create a propulsive feel and mood. |
