This is my first experience with Arion who plays a modern but well-executed power metal out of Finland that draws on bands like Stratovarius, Battle Beast and Pyramaze. The riffs are crisp, the songs are mostly short and sweet, sprinkled with some inevitable cheese, while the choruses are catchy almost to the point of ridiculousness. I mean, I'm not sure if I even like "From an Empire to a Fall" but I've been humming that chorus for days with a big smile on my ugly face. The same can be said about "Wildfire", "Black Swan" and the title track. While this album is definitely entertaining, the songwriting is somewhat variable. The verses serve little purpose other than being an unimportant stepping stone into a hooky chorus, which they admittedly nail it time and time again. I would think that their keen ear for melody can easily be applied to other parts of the songs, especially in place of that incessant yapping that you will hear on some of them. Actually, "Wildfire" captures the essence of this album in three-and-a-half minutes, with its slightly annoying verse, absolute earworm of a chorus, and blistering guitar solo. In other words, somewhat inconsistent, but a lot of fun. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
