Vigilhunter is a new band featuring Hitten/Jack Starr's Burning Star vocalist Alexx Panza and other Italian scene musicians that delivers some kick ass heavy/progressive metal on their self-titled debut. It probably isn't a surprise to hear a bit of Labyrinth in Vigilhunter's songwriting, given their shared land of origin, but Vigilhunter reach back to the '80s as well. "Sacrifice of Love" has a touch of melancholy and anguish, giving it an atmosphere akin to something from Queensrÿche's The Warning, and "Curse of the Street" ditches the progressive leanings for a straightforward, mid-tempo rocking approach like Malice's License to Kill. There are other hints of the music coming from the US West Coast in the time before glam really took hold, as well. The music on Vigilhunter possesses the youthful energy of the early '80s combined with the melodic and thoughtful songwriting of the early progressive metal movement and is a really enjoyable slab of heavy metal. An excellent debut. |
