Out of the Dark is the debut album from Boston-based band The Watcher, who caught the ear of Cruz del Sur Music with their brand of heavy/doom metal. The album features a mix of up-tempo tracks like "Burning World," "Kill or Be Killed" and "The Final Hour" and slower cuts like "Exiled" and "Thy Blood, Thy Blade." The former feature thugging guitars and thundering bass as they rumble out of the speakers while the latter are more pensive and atmospheric. The vocals are decent and fit the music well enough but are generally on the unremarkable side and the vocal lines are not overly exciting but don't get in the way of the music. There's some Black Sabbath in The Watcher's DNA, especially in the way they vary their songwriting, but their sound is more in line with some of the doomier bands of the early NWOBHM like Sledgehammer and Witchfinder General. Out of the Dark is a solid debut for The Watcher. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
