Of Love and Sorrow is the debut from Lay of the Autumn, a band out of Italy that formed in 2024. They play symphonic power metal and if you asked me for a reference point, it would be Sonata Arctica. Songs like "After All this Time? Forever" and "Love You to Death" have the kind of vocal lines (albeit sung by a woman) and emotional pull, as so many Sonata Arctica ballads have had across that band's discography. Other tracks are speedy power metal cuts that will give your air guitar and keytar fingers a workout as you try to keep up with the acrobatic runs up and down the scales. Everything sounds good on Of Love and Sorrow; the melodies are beautiful, the vocals lush, etc. and despite the songwriters playing it safe and sticking to the conventions of symphonic power metal, they still came up with some well-crafted numbers. Lay of the Autumn isn't breaking molds but should get an enthusiastic welcome from the symphonic power metal crowd. |
