This one has had a bit of buzz, and I am always up for some Hellenic Epic Metal, so I was glad to find this as good as it is. Arysithian Blade are a relatively new band and this is their debut, showing a strong sound that makes for a good addition to the Greek pantheon of bands. The first thing that came to mind when I heard this was Warlord, as they have a very melodic, rolling riff style. They have some similarity to mid-period Maiden with the guitar harmonies and the very upfront bass sound. I also hear some Arryan Path, some Wotan—all solid bands to follow in the footsteps of. The vocals are a bit rough, as Chris Papadakis has a style that takes some getting used to. He has a somewhat pinched, nasal tone, and a way of overselling it that reminds me of Gerrit Mutz in the old Sacred Steel days. He's not really bad, but he may not be something everybody can get past. The songwriting is a bit underdeveloped, and the songs often start well but then don't really go anywhere and just repeat. The riffs and melodies are really good, and will keep you listening, but this could have been even better than it already is. |
