Third album from Italy's Sign of the Jackal, a band that has been doing the retro-80s traditional metal thing for a while now. Heavy Metal Survivors reminds me a lot of the early '80s US scene when bands like RATT and Black and Blue were side by side with Metallica and Cirith Ungol on the early Metal Massacre compilations, before subgenres and labels were so prevalent. There is a lot of echo on the vocals, and the guitars have a good tone, giving the whole thing an authentic atmosphere. The songwriting is more hard rock oriented than I recall Mark of the Beast (the last one I reviewed) being, and though still firmly in the metal end of the pool, it isn't as catchy. Heavy Metal Survivors is a solid effort that should appeal to you if classic bands like Keel and Icon along with newer acts such as Riot City are in your collection, but I believe Sign of the Jackal has done better.
