This is some pretty cool death/thrash metal that leans more on thrash, or at least the more extreme end of the thrash subgenre, where the line with early death metal tends to get blurry. For some reason I didn't like the vocals much at first, and now it's one of the things I like the most about it—there's something to be said about giving an album several listens before forming an opinion. ;) The vocals are not without reminding me of the vocals on Sacrifice's The Ones I Condemn from 2009, though I like this here better. Harsh but decipherable vocals that manage to deliver catchy, sometimes melodic-ish vocal lines. The music is full of sharp guitar work that often took me back to the '80s, including the occasional passage that's slightly reminiscent of early Voïvod (took me a few listens to hear that). This is not some retro/revival band, however, and overall their death/thrash mostly carries a modern sound. The music is precise, heavy, crunchy and often mid-paced and there's often kind of a repetitiveness that gets the head banging and also makes some of the songs more memorable. Even though I didn't like this much at first, now I'm listening to it on a loop. Good stuff. |
