Grave Digger, one of the bigger names in German heavy metal, is at it again with album number 22, Bone Collector. This is the seventh Grave Digger album I've reviewed, stretching back to 2010, and at roughly an album every two years, it is hard to argue with their consistency. Unfortunately, the quality continues the downward trend since 2010's The Clans Will Rise Again, with each successive release doing almost nothing any different from the one before. Sure, the guitars are crunchy, the choruses have hooks, the vocals are a prototypical heavy/power gritty shout, it's a style Grave Digger helped create back in the '80s so they should be good at it by now. On the band's website, in the description for Bone Collector, they use the phrase "no self-copying," but I'd be hard pressed to point out anything that separates this one from the half dozen that have come before. The only thing that isn't generic is the opening riff on "Whispers of the Damned," which sounds an awful lot like the opening riff from the Michael Schenker Group's "Lost Horizons" off their debut album. If you want the same old Grave Digger album you already own six times over, Bone Collector fits the bill, but if you want to hear the band doing better than that, you're going to need to look elsewhere.
