Necrophobic return with their 10th full-length, In the Twilight Grey, which sees the band more or less continue in the same vein as Dawn of the Damned and Mark of the Necrogram. If you are familiar with their newer releases, you know what you're going to get here. This is more of the pummeling, evil-sounding, hook-ladened blackened death (deathened black?) metal that claws its way into your head and sticks (well, partly at least). I spent a long time contemplating how to rate this because I don't find their performance here as exquisite as on Dawn of the Damned or parts of Mark of the Necrogram. However, there is no denying the quality of this darkened spectacle with blistering songs such as "Clavis Inferni," "Shadows of the Brightest Night" and the title track. These songs and a couple of others more than hold their own against the material on those former albums, and will make you go "fuck yeah" and throw your fist in the air more than once. My main issue with this release is that the songwriting comes across as a little uneven. This becomes very audible on the slower songs such as "As Stars Collide" and "Nordanvind," which just sound flat and disrupt the flow of the album. This is also the first album by Necrophobic where I find my attention slipping on several songs in a row. So yeah, this album contains some really great songs, but overall, it's not their best work and I much prefer their previous releases over this. The good news is that 80% of the band released a killer album with In Aphelion in 2024, so be sure to check that one out as well. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
