Second album from this Argentinian black metal band that plays a melodic and less chaotic metal than we usually hear from South America. There are some death shouts woven into cuts like "The Omen," which complement the more ubiquitous rasping howls, but most of The Medivm is of the epic black metal stripe. Wolves' Winter has some solid songwriting chops, and the album has a good ebb and flow, neither putting the pedal to the metal the entire time nor getting bogged down in gloomy introspection. Theirs is not a cold, sterile second-wave black metal approach; instead, they opt to create more space in their compositions and let the tremolo picking and tortured wails share space with traditional riffing and organic drumming. The Medivm is an album that sounds good, and Wolves' Winter have crafted an engaging listening experience while mainly coloring within established lines. If you like your black metal to have a bit more melody, in the vein of mid-to-later Bathory or more recent acts like Sarvekas, check out what Wolves' Winter has going on. |
