This is some pretty good atmospheric black metal that's very melodic and sometimes melancholic, not really the kind of stuff you'll headbang to but rather the kind where you just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. The Holy Flesh aren't giving in to any old-school revival trend with this one, their black metal sounding relatively modern and "clean," but with some razor-sharp, ear-slicing guitar work that pays homage to the more raw bands from the good old days. The vocals are a bit behind in the mix and that really works well with the album's atmosphere, leaving the instruments do the talking while adding kind of an agonizing vibe. It might take a few listens to make this one to really sink in, but it's worth the effort. |
