Queen of Dreams is a power metal band out of Madison, Wisconsin, and Subnivium is their second album of European-style, slightly progressive music. If you told me this band was from Finland or Italy, I'd have no trouble believing you as they have an old world take on the style that is heavy, not too flowery and gets right to the point of showering the listening with crunchy guitars, hooky melodies and smooth choruses. The songwriting is above average, avoiding the gothic trappings a lot of the bigger female-fronted bands seem intent on employing, and though you've heard music like this before, the songs are strong enough to keep you listening. It seems like Queen of Dreams is aiming for the female-fronted power metal crowd that digs bands like Visions of Atlantis and Edenbridge and, for the most part, hit the nail on the head. |
