I had never heard of this Scottish band before their third album, No Place for the Damned, showed up in my review queue. Based on the cover art, logo font, etc., I was expecting a thrash metal effort but, to my surprise and delight, Tantrum threw volley after volley of heavy/power metal at me, each one a fine slab of metallic goodness and might. Singer Mark Reid has a strong, clear voice that is perfect for the brand of metal Tantrum plays. He's got great range and just enough "character" in his delivery to give the songs a unique flavor. The twin guitars harmonize well, and the riffs are excellent regardless of whether they are directly in your face like on "The Judge," creating some epic, galloping atmosphere on "The Pit and the Pendulum" or laying down fist-pumping power metal-tinged melodies on "W.A.I.L." There isn't a bad song in the bunch. No Place for the Damned sits at the intersection of late '80s heavy/power metal and fans of Iron Maiden, Helloween, Riot and Dio should seek it out. Now excuse me while I go and check out Tantrum's earlier albums. |
