This band has a weird name (from "agrypnos," a Greek word meaning, roughly, "sleepless") and has seven full-length albums in their 20-year history, some with weird, off-putting names like 16[485]—not kidding. I was not sure what to expect from this, but my hopes were not high. This is a kind of pretentious, ambitious Black Metal you get in Germany, similar to acts like Secrets of the Moon or Imperium Dekadenz, but the strongest influence I hear is mid-period Enslaved, with the time-shifting arrangements, touches of post-metal mood, and occasional brilliance. I wanted to be able to dismiss this, but it's too good, and creates too much force and momentum as it blazes along. Sure, sometimes the songs are too long and don't have enough to sustain them, but when this album hits, it hits hard.
