This is an interesting album by a band who are definitely aiming for something out of the ordinary, but I don't think they quite hit it. This is generally pretty mellow stuff kind of in a folky vein, like Slough Feg in the old days. The songwriting is quirky, and draws on influences outside the metal spectrum, reminding me a bit of occult rock acts like Ides of Gemini. I like the sound of this, but there is one problem, in that vocalist Caro is not being utilized well. I can tell she has a good voice and a lot of charisma, but she has a real problem staying on pitch. Her voice is mixed way out front, and she made me wince a lot listening to this. She has a strident style, and that requires you to be able to hit the note right off, bang. No sliding around or easing into it, you have to be on it, and a lot of the time she's not. The vocal melodies are interesting, but they are hard to stomach because they are just... not on key. It's frustrating because I feel like Caro could do a lot better than this, if she was coached and recorded with more care. |
