Seven Thrones is the third full-length album from this Canadian band that plays melodic heavy metal with a combination of raspy black and angelic female vocals. It's a combo that goes back to the "beauty and the beast" style employed by a multitude of bands over the years. Seven Thrones blend blast beat speed and enchanting melodies deftly, the vocals work well together, and they even create some mournful, doomy atmosphere on songs like "World's Burning". It's a great sounding album but I find the performances a bit stiff and rote, like these are musicians following carefully written sheet music vs. performers putting their emotions and personalities into the music. The Lightbringer are talented, but this album lacks the kind of charisma that would take their songs from competent to engaging. If you like Númenor or beauty and the beast vocals, there is certainly some value in checking out Seven Thrones, but I think The Lightbringer has another level they can reach. |
