Expedition One is the fourth album from Sweden's Metalite and, after enjoying their third album, 2021's A Virtual World, I was looking forward to some more high-flying, sci-fi-themed symphonic power metal from this band. If you like symphonic power metal, Expedition One has it all, from double-kick speed, insanely catchy hooks and vocal lines, and melodies so sweet, you can use them on your breakfast cereal. There's an embarrassment of riches in terms of singable choruses right from the outset with "Expedition One," "CtrlAltDel," "Cyberdome," etc., etc. There isn't a dull song in the bunch, and that's saying something, considering there are 16 tracks spanning over 67 minutes of run time on the album. Which brings me to a couple of issues that hold me back from giving this album a higher score. I've never been a fan of overly long albums and this one fits the mold as a there are a few songs that sound similar, so much so that I occasionally wondered if the album had finished and started over, and I was hearing a song a second time. When I would check, I'd realize that no, I'm just on track 14 or something and it just sounds like something earlier on the album. The keyboards are the other thing that stands out. Keys are nothing new in power and symphonic metal but typically they sound like keys, but over the past few years, bands like Beast in Black and even Iron Savior have leaned into a more synthesized sound like electronic music, and that is the case on Expedition One. It isn't a deal breaker, but I could stand a little more distance from dance/electronic music with my metal. When all is said and done, Expedition One's positives outweigh the negatives, so if you are a fan of female-fronted symphonic/power metal, and don't mind a little dance music in the mix, Metalite have a whole lot of music for you to enjoy.
