It is an interesting story that leads to Warrior: Anthology (1980-1990) from Bulgaria's Trotyl. According to the promo materials I received from Stormspell, they were active in the '80s, but in Bulgaria at that time the government prevented them from gaining access to recording facilities, so these songs were played live but never committed to tape by the original lineup. Fast-forward to the present and the band's current lineup has finally recorded these tracks for worldwide release. The songs are basically traditional heavy metal with some hard rock leanings and, because the songs were written over a 10-year period, there's a lot of variation across Warrior: Anthology. "The March," my favorite song, sounds a lot like early Warlord. It is one of the few really heavy songs on the album. Many of the other songs, like "Wicked World" and "Trotyl," have an accessible, hard rock vibe, not unlike the early, Guy Speranza Riot albums. Even though there isn't anything on Warrior: Anthology that is a revelation, it is nice to see a band that's been around so long still at it and finally getting their original material released. It might be worth grabbing a copy if you're really into early '80s US metal. |
