I remember Arizona's Atrophy from my days as the DJ of the metal show on my college radio station at the end of the '80s. Honestly, it would be hard to forget those memorable album covers. I'm sure I played a few tracks here and there from Socialized Hate and Violent by Nature but, coming at a time when there was a glut of thrash metal, neither stuck with me the way some of the more well-known bands have over the years. Fast forward to 2024 and, after a series of reformations, lineup changes, etc. that you can read about in Luxi's interview with singer Brian Zimmerman here on the site, Atrophy is back with their third album, Asylum. It is rare that a band comes back after a lengthy absence from the scene and kicks as much ass as Atrophy does on this new album. This is what thrash is supposed to sound like. Hammering riffs that bulldoze yet maintain a strong sense of melody, lead work that is sharp and purposeful, and barked vocals infused with outrage and indignation. The lyrics, full of social commentary, seem all too relevant in today's world that is full of tension and violence. On top of everything, Atrophy have successfully captured the sound of '80s thrash and paired it with a modern production, something they worked very hard to achieve and came up aces. There are no weak tracks on Asylum, just crusher after crusher with the superlative "Seeds of Sorrow" at the top of the heap and the pairing of the "The Apostle" and "Five Minutes 'Til Suicide" finishing the album in style. If you long for the days when '80s thrash was king, do not miss Asylum. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
