This band going by the name Savage is from Germany and according to Metal Archives has split up after only four years in existence, which if true, is a shame as their debut album, Glory Riders is a spot-on slice of '80s-inspired metal. Their songwriting deftly straddles the line between true heavy metal and the commercial accessibility that eventually overtook so many bands midway through that magical decade. Gravelly vocals and hyper-melodic hooks work hand in hand throughout the album, evoking everything from Motörhead to NWOBHM bands like Battleaxe to Savage's main touchpoint, W.A.S.P. (I am proud of myself for picking that up before I really looked at the cover art, which is a loving homage to The Last Command's back cover). There are no bad songs on Glory Riders, just pounding riffs, squealing leads, and choruses that you can pick up after only a single listen. I especially like "Wheels of Fire," where everything comes together in a near flawless way, right down to the "whoa-ohh-oh-ohh" backing vocals that are straight from "The Last Command," one of my favorite W.A.S.P. songs of all time. Glory Riders is a must for anyone that grew up in the '80s listening to the bands that stayed true to heavy metal despite the lure of the big label dollars. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
