Full Contact is the debut album from Canada's Kontact, following their EP First Contact from 2022. Featuring musicians from several other Canadian bands (Hrom, Traveler, ex-Blackrat, etc.), Kontact is their outlet for exploring weird, creepy, science fiction-influenced heavy metal or, in other words, their love of the '80s in general and Voïvod in particular. The croaky vocals, as on First Contact, fit the aesthetic of Kontact's take on heavy metal whether they are channeling the esoteric nature of Dimension Hatross-era Voïvod on "Doppelganger" or "Astral Vampire" or trending to a more accessible (or as accessible as this band gets) sound like the Mötley Crüe "Shout at the Devil" riff on "Heavy Leather" or the hard rock of "Blood Child." Despite not being a huge fan of Voïvod until later in my metal journey, I really like what Kontact are doing and if you are looking for a square peg that won't fit neatly into any of the round holes that are today's metal subgenres, you should definitely check them out.
