That running time is not a typo. This is one of the most ambitious albums I have ever heard, especially for a one-man band, and at over two hours it is certainly one of the longest. And this is not even the first time that multi-instrumentalist Tony "Dis Pater" Parker has made an album this long. I wasn't initially sure this would even qualify, as it is four minutes into the first track before we even hear a guitar riff, but once the metal starts, it keeps going. With the long songs and the big arrangements, this is definitely in the same vicinity of more atmospheric Black Metal bands like Evilfeast or Battle Dagorath, all of them beholden in some way to both Summoning and Emperor. There are a lot of long, melodic interludes on this, along with acoustic playing and clean singing, but the mainline of echoing, hollow-voiced Black Metal carries through, wringing out layered soundscapes. The drums and bass are very back in the mix, and so the whole thing is carried on guitars and keys, making for a spacey, oceanic sound. It's not heavy or brutal or aggressive, but it is involving. Not easy for a 2+ hour album to keep my attention all the way through, but this one does. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
