It's been a while since I indulged in some funeral doom, but for some reason Abîmes I, by Belgian duo Slow, caught my eye. Unsurprisingly, this is crushingly slow, sounding like the dark ending of a movie where every character is dead or shit out of luck. In other words, this is very melancholic and it just sounds like there's no light at the end of the tunnel. The music is strangely beautiful in its desperation, a soundtrack to hopelessness—or, less dramatically, maybe to very grim weather (no shortage of that around here). The growled vocals are just as agonizing, often dragging for several seconds and guaranteed to trigger some anguish and desperation. I'm not versed enough in funeral doom to say that this is better or worse than what other bands of the genre do, but if you're looking for a downer, this should do the trick. |
