I never really got into Suffocation but, having ignored them for several years, I figured it was time to revisit them—that, and they were playing in town a few weeks ago. I like this album better than whatever one I last checked out many years ago. I'm not big on technical death metal, but I like what they're doing here, lots of tech, but also quite brutal—I'm reminded a bit of Cannibal Corpse at times. The vocals are harsh growls, not über guttural, just the way I like them. There's more speed here than you can shake a stick at (not that this would make any sense), and Suffocation is largely prioritizing speed over sheer heaviness; this won't crush you, but it'll give your neck one hell of a workout and send your chiropractor on a sunny vacation. I may just have to go and revisit those older albums.
