Here we have the Lithuanian take on folk metal from the band Ūkanose. Their second album, Šiaurum vėjum makes use of typical folk elements such as male and female vocals (mostly clean), modern instruments like electric guitars and drums, and folk instruments, with the flute heard the most and other instruments popping up in the background. It's an easy on the ears album with almost none of the black metal trappings this kind of music usually incorporates, and all the melodies and vocal lines are smooth and go down easy. On the flipside, I find the vocals lacking in emotional depth and a bit wooden, the songwriting is capable but not very memorable, and it isn't the heaviest music out there. Not that being heavy is the be all, end all, but there are times (" Apynėlis," " Plėšikėliai ") when I felt like I was listening to Jethro Tull. This isn't meant as an insult, I like Jethro Tull, just as a frame of reference for those going in looking for something heavier. Šiaurum vėjum fine while it is on, but is ultimately on the generic side and doesn't leave much behind when it is over.
