Aeternus have had a long career, starting in the '90s with well-regarded albums of adventurous, moody Black Metal like Beyond the Wandering Moon and ...And So the Night Became, but that was a long time ago, and only guitarist/vocalist Ares remains from the old days. The band went through a period of inactivity between 2006 and 2013, but recently has been quite productive, with two albums in the past five years, including this, their ninth overall.

I wasn't sure how this would hold up, but while I find this less fresh sounding than their old stuff, it still manages to conjure a lot of the same magic. The opener is pretty stodgy, but further into the album the band gets more into the involved, rather subtle melodies that were what made their past works so good. These songs are not all gold, and they too often just kind of drop into plodding repetition, but that stands out because then they will get into something good and you will remember that this is a band that was great and could be again. Uneven, but worthy.
