An interesting slab of death metal here, in that Fuming Mouth are experimenting with the sound and not sounding like a ton of other bands. Interesting, yes, but it doesn't always work. I like their modern take on the genre, with a crushingly heavy, crispy and crunchy sound that overtakes the speakers and assaults the senses. Even on the first listen, a few songs will grab you right away. The vocals are variable, and that's one of the things that don't work so well, at least to my ears. There's a more growly style that works well, but also a lot of screaming that can get annoying at times and just reminds me of core-ish and nu-metal vocals, without being quite that. Where things fall apart is when the clean vocals kick in. I felt immediately thrown back to the grunge era. It's not grunge, but it has that feel. That might work for you if you ever were into that stuff. Overall, the music here and violent and punishing, very crushing stuff. I certainly respect Fuming Mouth for trying a lot of things here, but it comes off a little too disjointed to feel like an album as opposed to a collection of random songs. There's a lot to like and some to dislike on Last Day of Sun, but either way it is certainly interesting. |
