Formed by ex-Draconian singer Heike Langhans and Sojourner maestro Mike Lamb, Remina is a project rooted in Gothic Doom, but also pulling in influences from ambient, darkwave, and electronic music to present a gloomy, atmospheric soundscape. Langhans is a mesmerizing singer, with a dark, haunted tone that easily slips from delicate to mournful. Usually I dislike when singers multitrack their voice, but when Langhans does it, she becomes this cascade of sirenical sound that I find compelling. Combine her evocative voice with Lamb's atmospheric, layered approach to songwriting and you have something that swells and crashes like waves on a bleak shore. This is far from super-heavy (in fact there is a "Deconstructed" version of the album that removes the vocals and focuses entirely on the ambient angle) but it is still a spellbinding release. |
