This is not a new studio album from Bunker 66, but rather a cool compilation of all the tracks they released on 7" and splits that weren't part of their studio albums. I wish more bands did that. For a bunch of songs that were not meant to be released as part of a near 59-minute disc, I find that everything flows pretty flawlessly and none of the songs sounds out of place, so the band did a good job in the song ordering. Bunker 66 is a pretty straightforward, gimmick-free band, so that also helps. This is filled with their raw, blackened speed/thrash that often sounds like it could have been released back in the '80s, the kind of underground stuff not many people were aware of while the big names were garnering all the attention. This is a crowded genre these days and, while Bunker 66 aren't reinventing the wheel, they're up there when it comes to quality and delivery; this pretty much kicks ass from beginning to end. If you've missed out on some of the 7" and split releases or simply want a good sample of what this band is all about, Portraits of Dismay is a very nice compilation that will give your neck one hell of a workout.
