Another French black metal band kicking ass and taking names, Pénitence Onirique offers on Nature Morte some very introspective, atmospheric melodic black metal. There's a good blend of fast and slow songs here, but the emphasis is on powerful, heavy slower songs that pin you to your seat and force you to pay attention and immerse yourself into the music—beware where that might lead you. ;) It's a multilayered album and with each listen I kept noticing things I hadn't noticed before, so multiple listens are a must for the band's brand of black metal to really sink in. This is not the kind of black metal you'll headbang like crazy or slam into walls with, but rather one that makes you sit back and think (or relax, if you're a disturbed individual like me—hehe). Definitely worth checking out if atmospheric black metal is your thing. |
