Yet another mesmerizing release from one-man black metal band Terragon. The first two albums were downright hypnotic, and that is also true with this one, and the "Part One" hints at more to come. This one is more ambient and less "metallic," so I didn't enjoy it as much, but it's nevertheless a very enjoyable and immersive listen from beginning to end. No need to tell you this is based on Tolkien's writings. The music is very melancholic and dark, sometimes very relaxing if not downright soothing, sometimes kind of doomy. A generous use of synths creates an omnipresent dark and heavy atmosphere, but the vocals (in English this time around) also contribute greatly to that. Sometimes the expected "sung" black metal rasps, but a lot of it is spoken either with clean vocals or the aforementioned rasps that are sometimes whispered. The closing cover of "Gollum's Song" also features some clean female vocals. The whole album comes off epic-sounding—you can't help but think, "It's only ONE guy doing this?" If atmospheric black metal is your thing and don't mind it being a little "low" on the metal content, and/or you can't get enough of Tolkien, then this is definitely worth checking out.
