I didn't know these Japanese death metallers before I got this mini-album and I haven't had a chance to check out anything else they've released, but if it's anything like Beyond Oblivion, it'll be worth checking out. Transgressor formed way back in 1989 and their late-80s origins certainly show. There's some of the Swedish school of death metal here, but Transgressor go their own way with something dirtier, creepier and enough heaviness to make a freight train look like a Mini Austin. The growls aren't cavernous but have the same dark, haunting and creepy effect. The songs can be speedy, but I find it's the slower, heavier numbers that are the most noteworthy, with a creepy (here's that word again) atmosphere that's a mix of melancholy and horror, really haunting stuff that the band pulls off with flying colours. I wish more death metal bands would do this kind of stuff. I guess the letdown here is that this is so short but, hey, just press play again and enjoy. |
